Parking Woes

Sometimes the Government wonders why are medical specialists are leaving the service. Many speculate it is mainly because of money. That may be true in some cases but there are many who left that wereare disatissfied j with the way they are treated by the government, by the administrators.

Last week, was a reminder of how little is the value of a medical specialist in a government hospital. A day prior to the long Merdeka holidays a memo was sent to the HOD of all departments in my hospital stating that only TWO parking lots will be allocated for the Department. And then on 2nd September, when all of us came back to work we were shocked, our previously alotted parking lots had been taken away. There are at least THREE specialists in each department.

And just imagine, we are talking about government officers (Pegawai Kerajaan Kumpulan A - i.e. Professionals) who had been working in the government for at least 8-9 years. And these people had to spend another 4 years doing their Masters to improve themselves to become SPECIALISTS.

Come on, what other perks can we expect. Our basic pay is a pittance, it is only plumped up by the specialist allowance; working hours are unpredicatable; and even our overtime stands at only RM 3.33 to RM6 per hour (RM50/day to RM 90/day). Our MOs get better pay!!!!

It some hospital, we do not even get a room or a desk. Might as well not study hard and become a pegawai tadbir and then sit at YOUR desk all day long doing not nothing but just something. And you may even get a parking spot if you are nice to the CC.

So a parking lot is a big deal. At least you do not have to scramble for a lot in the mornings and if you have to go out to the bank, you know it will be waiting for you when you get back. It is just a little bit of respect and dignity that we are asking for.

So administrators, before you go pointing fingers and accusing doctors of being money minded just think, what have you done to make our life bearable!

Drive Safely

It has been a busy weekend and I have another two days to go before I finish my call. When my colleague Su told me that oncall in the puasa month is horrendous with severe injuries and bad accidents.. The past three days proved that.

Today tops it up. At about 6.30 pm I received a call from my MO informing me there has been an accident involving a family of 5. What made me really sad was this incident involved kids of 4 years, 3 years and 5 month. The father had spinal injury and may be paraplegic after this. ahhh...such a young family. What i cannot tahan the most is hearing the baby cry and cry...

I am so sad.

When I hear the radio advert on to be safe on the road I usually laugh... but it is true. It is usually the ones around us that is affected when we drive carelessly or when we are involved in an accident.

So dearest friends,

Drive defensively, drive safely
Take a break when you need it
Hope you will reach your destination and back safely

exhausted.....

Yesterday, I knocked off early... unintentionally. After, buka, I called my MO to find out if there is anything urgent as I felt dead tired... shoulders aching, back feels like giving way..... Was so happy when he said he didn't need me there.... I slept off on the sofa by 9pm.... nothing productive done at home tonight...

Why was I soooo tired? Well, yesterday I had few surgeries lined up (monday is my operating day), and all 3 cases used image intensifier.

Image intensifiers are special devices used in surgery and it involves the usage of lower dose x rays to produce images, enabling the viewer/surgeon to easily see the structure of the object being imaged. In Orthopaedics, it is used in surgeries that mostly involves putting an implant in the medullary canal (intramedullary device)

Anyway, since the cases involves radiation from the II, all those involved had to use radiation protection in the form of a lead gown (which weights > 3 kgs)... So I had a total of 5 hours lifting more than 3 kgs on my shoulders.... During surgery, I did not feel anything, I guess the adrenaline was pumping.... but at the end of the last case, oh boy, everywhere aches...

I guess this is added on by the fact I am fasting, and drove all the way from KL in the morning... or perhaps just that I am already old.... hmmmm......
